Many clocks, mirrors and furniture have detail embellished with gold leaf.

Over time the furniture can become damaged, the gold leaf can wear off or wear through,  making your item of furniture look unseenly and exposing plaster layers below which can make the item more vulnerable to further damage.

Below the surface of the gold leaf there may be plaster damage, or damage to other layers that needs to be corrected first before the leaf can be restored. If this lower level of damage is not restored it can make your item unstable and prone to more damage.

In order to maintain value as well as keep your item looking well, careful restoration can be undertaken.

Gold leaf restoration is an artform and careful attention needs to be taken in each case. Once the foundation is restored, the last layer to be completed is that of the gold leaf.
